Vehicle Rental Age, License, Deposit and Insurance Requirements
A verified U.S. comparison of eleven major car, RV, motorcycle and boat-rental platforms
Last verified: August 25, 2026
Renting a vehicle is not governed by one universal minimum age or one standard deposit. A 21-year-old may qualify for a Cruise America RV but not an RVezy rental. Turo changes its age requirement according to the value and class of the car. Motorcycle platforms require the appropriate endorsement and may ask younger riders to document several years of experience. Boat rentals are even more variable because the listing, captain arrangement and local boating laws all matter.
This guide compares the published requirements of eleven platforms serving U.S. travelers. It focuses on the questions most likely to stop a booking at checkout or pickup: minimum age, accepted license, deposit, and the basic role of insurance or protection products.
Rental eligibility is only part of the picture. For a deeper look at liability coverage, damage waivers and platform protection plans, see Vechura's . Vehicle Rental Insurance and Protection Guide.

Car rentals
Fox Rent A CarMinimum age. Fox states that renters with proper credentials may rent from corporate locations beginning at age 19. Active-duty military travelers on qualifying orders may be eligible at 18. Renters under 25 should expect a young-driver surcharge, and affiliate or franchise locations can set different rules. License and payment. A valid driver's license and an accepted payment method are required. Foreign-license documentation, debit-card acceptance, geographic restrictions and authorization amounts vary by pickup location. Fox directs renters to the individual location policy, so a national summary should never replace the pickup-location rules. Deposit and protection. Fox does not publish one nationwide deposit amount for every rental. The authorization depends on the location, payment method and vehicle. Optional protection products and proof-of-insurance requirements also vary by location.

TuroMinimum age. Turo's U.S. eligibility changes by vehicle class. The minimum is 18 for a standard vehicle, 21 for a vehicle with a total market value above $20,000, 25 for Deluxe Class, and 30 for Super Deluxe Class, classic or specialty vehicles. Drivers ages 18 through 24 pay a young-driver fee.
License. The primary guest must present or upload a physical license that remains valid through the trip. Turo accepts qualifying permanent and temporary licenses, but does not accept expired, altered, conditional, probationary, provisional or restricted licenses.
Deposit and protection. Turo does not require a security deposit for every booking. Deposits can apply to certain premium vehicles, locations or security reviews and are shown during checkout. U.S. trips include third-party liability insurance. Optional protection plans limit contractual responsibility for eligible physical damage, but availability and limits depend on the guest, vehicle and trip.

ExpediaRole in the rental. Expedia is a booking marketplace rather than the company supplying the vehicle. Its general terms apply to the reservation process, but the selected rental company's rules and restrictions control eligibility, payment, deposit, insurance requirements and pickup documentation.
Minimum age and license. Expedia states that drivers are usually between ages 21 and 75, although the supplier and rental country can set different limits. Young-driver or older-driver fees may apply. The driver must present a full, valid license for the rented vehicle category, plus any passport, international driving permit or address documentation required by the supplier.
Deposit and payment. Expedia's terms state that the driver must present a valid credit card in the driver's name at pickup. The supplier may place a refundable security-deposit authorization on that card, and some larger vehicles may require two cards. Renters should open the booking's specific Rules and Restrictions before paying because there is no universal Expedia deposit or protection plan for every supplier.
LVC ExoticsMinimum age and license. LVC Exotics requires every renter and driver to be at least 25, with no stated exceptions. U.S. and Canadian renters must present a valid physical driver's license. Photocopies, digital copies and temporary licenses are not accepted. International renters should confirm their license documentation directly with LVC before booking.
Deposit and payment. LVC requires a major credit card for a refundable security-deposit authorization ranging from $500 to $2,000, depending on the vehicle and rental length. Cash, prepaid cards, startup cards and personal debit cards are not accepted for the deposit.
Insurance and operating limits. Renters must provide proof of their own full-coverage auto insurance, including comprehensive and collision coverage that transfers to the selected vehicle. LVC does not sell insurance. Coverage limits vary by vehicle, and renters must submit an insurance declarations page for verification. Rentals are restricted to LVC's permitted Las Vegas-area boundaries, with no out-of-state or Grand Canyon driving.
RV rentals
OutdoorsyMinimum age. Outdoorsy generally uses age 25 for unrestricted moveable-RV eligibility. Guests ages 21 through 24 may qualify for selected U.S. or Canadian bookings when the RV is valued below $75,000, is not a Class A or fifth wheel, and the guest selects an eligible protection package and pays the young-driver surcharge. Stationary delivered RVs may also be available beginning at age 21.
License and screening.A renter must hold a valid, non-temporary license, complete Outdoorsy's driver-verification process and satisfy driving-history requirements. International guests may also need a passport and, depending on the issuing region, an international driving permit.
Deposit and protection. Protection-package eligibility depends on the guest and vehicle. Deposit amounts are booking specific, so the listing and checkout disclosure control. All intended drivers should complete verification before the key exchange.

RVezyMinimum age. RVezy requires the renter and every approved driver to be at least 25. Its help center states that the age requirement applies even when an RV is delivered and will not be driven or towed by the guest.
License and screening. Drivers need a full, valid and unrestricted license, a clean driving record, identity verification and an approved-driver check. A valid credit card is also required.
Deposit and protection. Most RVezy rentals use a host-set security deposit displayed with the listing and booking. RVezy places a temporary authorization three days before the trip. Its help center says that selecting the loss damage waiver removes the security-deposit requirement and provides limited deductible protection, subject to the program terms.
RVezy approved-driver requirements
Cruise AmericaMinimum age and license. Cruise America requires drivers to be at least 21 and hold a valid driver's license. A standard license is sufficient for its rental motorhomes; a commercial driver's license is not required. International renters may use a qualifying home-country license with a passport.
Deposit and payment. Cruise America's published FAQ states that a $300 reservation down payment is applied to the rental and that the remaining balance plus a minimum $500 refundable security deposit is due before departure. Certain events and special rental applications can require larger deposits. Accepted cards and the driver-license name must match the company's payment rules.
Protection. Renters should review the rental agreement for included liability, damage responsibility and optional coverage. Every driver must be identified and listed on the agreement.
Motorcycle rentals
Riders ShareMinimum age. Riders Share requires renters to be at least 21. Renters under 25 must document at least three years of riding experience.
License and screening. A valid motorcycle license or endorsement is required unless the selected vehicle legally does not require one. Temporary or paper licenses are generally not accepted unless the renter can document a prior qualifying motorcycle license. Riders Share also verifies identity and driving eligibility.
Deposit and protection. Renters need a valid credit or debit card with sufficient funds for the trip and any applicable security deposit. Riders review the protection and damage-waiver choices during the reservation process. Coverage pricing is not necessarily included in the advertised daily rental rate.

EagleRiderMinimum age. EagleRider's standard minimum is 21. Its U.S. program allows some renters ages 18 through 20 when they hold a motorcycle license or endorsement, have completed an approved Harley-Davidson Riding Academy or Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, and rent an eligible motorcycle up to 500cc.
License. A valid motorcycle license or endorsement is required. Tour products may also require or recommend experience on heavyweight motorcycles.
Deposit and protection. EagleRider states that the credit-card authorization can range from $100 to $5,000 depending on the selected theft and damage waiver. Renters may use qualifying personal motorcycle insurance after confirming that it covers rental motorcycles, but some rentals may still require a $5,000 authorization.
Boat rentals
Boat marketplaces require a different kind of comparison. Unlike a national car-rental fleet, eligibility can depend on the vessel, whether a captain is included, the owner's standards and the laws where the boat operates. A platform-wide number should not be treated as the final rule for an individual boat.
SailoAge and operating credentials. Sailo listings can be captained or bareboat, and the requirements depend on the listing and jurisdiction. A renter ordinarily does not need an operator license when a professional captain operates the vessel. Bareboat renters may need boating-safety credentials, documented experience or a license required by local law.
Deposit and insurance. Sailo's published security-deposit policy describes a minimum $500 deposit when applicable, with the actual amount determined for the booking. Its platform insurance applies only to eligible vessels and transactions. Owners can also use their own charter insurance, so the listing and checkout terms remain controlling.
SamBoatAge and license. SamBoat operates internationally, and its listings state whether a boat is offered bareboat, with a captain, or both. Minimum age, boating-license requirements and experience standards depend on the vessel, owner and jurisdiction. Some boats can be operated without a license under local rules, while others require documented credentials.
Deposit and insurance. Security deposits are shown on individual listings and may be managed online or directly by the owner. The amount can change depending on whether a captain is selected. SamBoat offers optional products such as cancellation and security-deposit insurance, but those products do not eliminate the need to review the vessel's actual rental conditions.
What renters should verify before paying
The exact vehicle. Age eligibility can change with vehicle value, class, engine size or RV type.
The pickup location. Local law, franchise policy, airport rules and payment requirements can override a national summary.
Every driver. Additional drivers generally need to be approved and listed before operating the vehicle.
The deposit authorization. Confirm the amount, acceptable card type, release timing and circumstances that permit charges.
The protection terms.“Protection plan,” “damage waiver” and “insurance” are not interchangeable. Check liability coverage, physical-damage responsibility, exclusions and deductibles.
The operating area. Vehicle and boat agreements may restrict states, countries, roads, waterways or off-road use.
Methodology and limitations
Vechura reviewed current platform help pages, terms, rental policies and booking guidance available on August 25, 2026. The guide prioritizes official platform sources and reports nationwide rules only when the platform publishes them as nationwide. When a company uses location-, listing- or vehicle-specific rules, the guide says so instead of presenting one potentially misleading number.
Rental policies can change without notice. This resource is a planning reference, not legal or insurance advice. The listing, checkout disclosures and signed rental agreement control each transaction.
