Austin City Limits: Travel Guide for Tickets, Where to Stay, and Getting Around

Travel Guide for Tickets, Where to Stay, and Getting Around
Published on: August 25, 2026
The US is full of annual music festivals, but one of the absolute best, without question, is Austin City Limits (ACL). This city-centric two-weekend event started in 2002, so it's newer than familiar favorites like Lollapalooza and the legendary Woodstock. Today, it's firmly established as one of the country's major music festivals and can't be ignored. In 2026, ACL returns to Zilker Park for two weekends: October 2-4 and October 9-11.
ACL is held in South Austin, so like the multi-media festival SXSW that takes place all over the city, it doesn't have the logistical challenges of Burning Man or Coachella . Despite its urban location, a trip to ACL still requires planning.
From buying tickets to the best areas to stay and how to get around, this guide has you covered. Put the time in now, and you're free to focus on enjoying the nine stages showcasing rock, hip hop, country, folk, and electronic music once you arrive at Zilker Park.
How to Get Austin City Limits Tickets

ACL tickets are available in several tiers, but your first decision is which weekend you want to attend. The festival runs over two weekends, with tickets purchased separately for each. Check the Austin City Limits site for current dates, daily lineups, ticket options, and festival updates.
Here are some of your options:
- 1-day or 3-day General Admission (GA)
- 1-day or 3-day GA+
- 1-day or 3-day VIP
- Platinum
- 3-day Y'all Access
Tickets can sell out quickly, especially for the most popular days and ticket levels. If you know which weekend you want to attend, it's worth checking availability sooner rather than later.
What if You Miss Out?
If the tickets you want are sold out, you may still be in luck. Resale tickets for Austin City Limits are often available through Ticket Liquidator, including single-day and multi-day options.
Ticket-Buying Tip: If your budget only stretches to a 1-day pass, check the daily lineups before you purchase. You don't want to miss your favorites.
Getting To and From Austin City Limits
Held at Austin's Zilker Metropolitan Park, ACL is one of the easier music festivals to get to. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is the obvious choice, although San Antonio can be a backup if you find significantly better airfare or flight times.
Assuming you land at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, you have the option of renting a car or relying on taxis and public transportation to get into the city.
Austin Airport Car Rentals
The perk of renting a car right at the airport is the convenience. Car rentals also offer a lot more flexibility for day trips. The downside? You'll have to find parking throughout your stay.
A rental car is most useful if you're staying outside central Austin or planning to explore beyond the festival. Just don't count on driving to Zilker Park on festival days. ACL does not provide parking at the park or in the surrounding neighborhoods, so you'll need to use the festival shuttle, public transportation, rideshare, walking, or biking to reach the gates.
Austin Airport Public Transportation Options
The main route to and from the airport that isn't a taxi or ride share is the #20 bus. It picks up and drops off on the lower level near baggage claim. All you have to do to find the stop is look out for the large neon-blue guitar.
This route will get ACL-goers downtown in about 35 minutes and only costs the regular bus fare (currently $1.25). The bus runs every 15 minutes (4:45 am to 11:30 pm, leaving from the airport) every day. But make sure to check CapMetro's current schedule and trip planner before you arrive, in case anything changes.
Outside the normal hours, rely on the #483 Night Owl bus. The final point on the route is downtown Austin at 6th Street
How to Get Around Austin During Your Trip

Once you've arrived in town, you need to know how to get to Zilker Park and do a little sightseeing. If you're planning to stay in the main areas of Austin, Capital Metro's bus routes and MetroRail Red Line can get you everywhere you need to go (with a little help from your feet). These are the most useful trips from downtown:
- Zilker Park – Take the #30 bus and get off at the Barton Springs stop (15 minutes). ACL Fest also runs shuttles every day the event is running. Check the festival's transportation information before you leave your hotel so you know the best option for that weekend.
- Texas State Capitol – Around a 10-minute walk, depending on your starting point. Free tours are available every day except Sunday, if you want to see more than the grounds.
- Blanton Museum of Art – Right next to the Capitol grounds with collections ranging from Renaissance works to 20th-century American paintings.
- 6th Street – The nightlife district here is reachable on foot within about 20 minutes, and don't miss the historic Driskill Hotel before you settle somewhere for dinner and drinks.
A good portion of Austin's attractions are best explored if you have a car, such as:
- Circuit of the Americas (30 minutes)
- Lake Austin (30 minutes)
- McKinney Falls State Park (20 minutes)
Where to Stay for Austin City Limits
As an urban festival, you have many choices of where to stay when you're attending ACL. Here are the top picks and the associated benefits:
Downtown Austin
- Easy access to festival transportation
- Walking distance to nightlife (especially 6th Street)
- Plenty of rideshare availability
The catch? You'll potentially pay significantly more for your accommodation. Hotels know how in demand they are during festival weekends.
South Congress (SoCo)
- A good selection of boutique hotels
- Restaurants and live music venues are plentiful
- Unique shopping options
SoCo is still convenient to reach Zilker Park using the combo of bus #801 and #30, and the trip should take about 40 minutes. The reward for staying here is more of a local vibe and better prices compared to downtown.
South Lamar
- Close to the festival
- Affordable
- Excellent dining
Since South Lamar is close to Zilker Park, you only need around 25 minutes on bus #3 to get to and from the festival.
East Austin
- Trendy, trendy, trendy
- Craft breweries and boutique hotels aplenty
- Still not as expensive as downtown
To get to the venue from East Austin, take bus #2 to downtown and then pick up the #30. It should take around 45 minutes if your connections line up.
Outskirts of Austin

- Less congestion
- Lower prices
- More flexibility for day trips during the week, like:
- Fredericksburg – Wineries, German architecture, and lovely Texas Hill Country views.
- Hamilton Pool Reserve – A 30-minute hike gets you to a breathtaking grotto pool, and it's under an hour from downtown.
- Inks Lake State Park – Get away from festival chaos and into nature, also about an hour from Austin. Camp overnight along the lakeshore if you have time.
Although you'll have a longer commute on ACL weekends, staying outside central Austin can save significant cash. Renting an RV can also be a good option if you're extending your trip to explore the surrounding area, with plenty of campgrounds around Austin and the Texas Hill Country.
Tips for a Successful First Visit to Austin City Limits
- Arrive early. No one wants to miss a minute of the performances, so everyone tends to show up all at once. Beat the rush, and you won't spend ages waiting in security lines. Plus, you'll have more time to get the lay of the land.
- Be comfortable. You'll be on your feet for hours and moving around a lot. Wear shoes and clothing that'll be comfortable all day (and night) long.
- Pack thoughtfully. Bring sunscreen, clothing layers (nights can be chilly in early October), a phone charger, a reusable water bottle, and any other festival essentials you'll want for a full day at Zilker Park.
- Use all the services. Download the ACL app to plan your festival days and take advantage of the shuttles to get to and from the event.
- Pre-set a meeting point. In case you get separated from your friends, agree on a meeting place as soon as you arrive at Zilker Park.
Explore Austin and ACL Together
One of ACL's biggest advantages is its location. Don't forget to set aside time to experience Austin's live music venues, barbecue restaurants, food trucks, and eclectic neighborhoods to make the most of your trip.
If you have an extra day, get beyond downtown too. Swim or hike at McKinney Falls State Park, spend an afternoon in the Texas Hill Country, take a food or sightseeing tour, or simply explore parts of Austin you didn't have time to see between festival sets. ACL may be the reason for the trip, but Austin is worth giving yourself some extra time to experience.
